What to sort out before you climb
None of this needs special equipment. It needs a full tank and a plan for the day, and it is easiest to get right if you settle it before you leave Marrakech.
Fill up before you climb
Fuel is easy to find on the roads around Marrakech, at Ait Ourir and along the motorway. Once the road starts climbing towards Taddert it thins out fast, and there is nothing reliable between there and Ouarzazate. Top up in Marrakech or at Ait Ourir, not "when it gets low". Attendants serve you; there is no self-service, and you pay in dirhams.
Manual earns its keep here
A low gear held on the descent saves your brakes far better than riding the pedal. It is one of the few roads in the region where a manual gearbox is a genuine advantage, not just the cheaper option.
Carry your paperwork
Checkpoints on the approach roads are routine and nothing to worry about. Keep your licence, the rental agreement and your passport within reach in the car.
Leave with the sun, not after it
An early start beats the coach traffic on the climb and puts the best light on the descent. Afternoon heat in summer works against you on both counts.

How much of the day to give it
Three honest shapes for the trip, depending on how much time you actually have.
The shortest version. Climb from Marrakech to the Tizi n Tichka viewpoint, stop for the panorama and the roadside stalls, then head back down the way you came. Call it five to six hours in the car including stops, all of it in daylight, and you are back in Marrakech for a late dinner.
Doable, but the honest math is about eight hours of driving there and back in a single day, on a road where lorries and switchbacks set your pace. It works if you leave at first light and turn straight around, but it leaves no real time in Ouarzazate itself and no margin if traffic or weather slows the pass.
The version that actually lets you enjoy the drive. Cross the pass, see Ait Ben Haddou on the way in, and sleep in Ouarzazate before either continuing south or returning the next day. Telouet, just off the main road before the descent, is worth the detour if you are not racing the clock.
Technique for a road you don't drive at home
None of this is advanced. It is mostly the opposite of city-driving habits.
On the climb
- Never overtake into a blind switchback. You cannot see what is coming the other way.
- Expect lorries and coaches to swing wide on the tighter bends. Give them the room.
- Pull into a marked lay-by for photos. Stopping on the bend itself is how the road catches people out.
On the descent
- Hold a low gear and let the engine do the slowing. Riding the brakes the whole way down overheats them.
- Set your pace by the road, not the car behind you. Faster traffic will pass when there is room.
- In winter, ask locally before committing to the crossing. Snow near the summit is occasional but real.
