Three places at the far end of the road
Each of the three adds something different to the trip, and together they are why one night usually beats one day.
A fortified earthen village on the Ounila river, UNESCO-listed, reached by parking below and crossing on foot. The climb to the granary at the summit is steep but short, and the reason people stop here at all is the view back over the valley from the top, not the walk itself.
The town is a base, not a spectacle: a wide ochre grid, the Taourirt Kasbah at its edge, and the practical gateway everything south of the Atlas runs through. Atlas Studios and CLA Studios sit on the outskirts, large dusty outdoor sets rather than a polished attraction, worth an afternoon if you like seeing how the scale of it was built rather than a curated exhibit.
From Ouarzazate the Draa valley opens south towards Zagora, a palm-lined river road that turns a night into two for most people who reach this far. East, the Dades and Todgha gorges add another full day each. None of this needs deciding today, but it is why an overnight so often becomes longer.
The practical side of a day past the pass
Four practical things worth settling before you decide whether this is a day trip or an overnight.
Fuel and cash
Fill the tank before you leave Marrakech and again in Ouarzazate if you are staying. Card acceptance thins out fast past the pass; carry dirhams for parking, the Ait Ben Haddou entry ticket and any guide you hire there.
Timing and light
Leaving the pass behind, the ground turns red and open and the road runs mostly west on the way back, straight into a low afternoon sun. A late departure from Ouarzazate means driving the mountain stretch half-blind rather than half-tired, which is the real argument for starting home early or not starting home at all.
Paperwork and checkpoints
Nothing changes from the rest of the route: licence, rental agreement and passport within reach, and checkpoints on the approach roads are routine rather than a delay worth dreading.

As a same-day return it works only for a first-light start with no margin either side. That gives you Ait Ben Haddou on the way in and a few hours in Ouarzazate, then the same pass to drive home. It is not a wasted day, but it is a full one, and the honest answer for most visitors is that it works properly as an overnight instead.
An hour covers the walk up to the granary and the view back over the valley, which is the actual reason to stop. Give it longer if you want to wander the lower lanes of the ksar itself or the light is good for photographs, since most visitors see it on the way through rather than as a separate trip.
If you go in expecting a polished attraction, no. Atlas Studios and CLA Studios are large, dusty outdoor sets, genuinely used for desert and antiquity films over decades, and they read as interesting rather than impressive. Worth an hour if you are already staying the night, not worth a special detour on their own.
Ouarzazate itself is the practical choice: close to both the ksar and the studios, and it sets you up to continue south the next morning without backtracking. Telouet, just off the main road before the descent from the pass, is the alternative if you would rather stop earlier in the day.

Harder than the drive out. You are heading broadly west back towards the pass in the afternoon, with the sun low and direct in your eyes on the open plateau before the road climbs again. It is a concrete, weather-independent reason to start home earlier than you think you need to, or to simply not drive it in one day at all.
